If you want to step away from old-school methods and begin climbing the ranks as of today, then this article is designed specifically for you. Let’s get started with this SEO Guide & Checklist by Potens Digital and start ranking your business now!

Why Trust This Checklist?

We’ve used this exact checklist to secure Page One ranking and deliver high-intent traffic for competitive local queries in under 90 days.

Our methodology quickly moved North Padel Club, one of our clients, into the top 6 positions for the high-value search term “Padel Toronto”.

Average Position 5.4 was achieved for the primary transactional query.

Generated 3.77K Impressions and 316 Clicks directly from Google Search in 3 months.

The power of this checklist is its priority-driven sequence. That said, you do not need to implement every single item immediately. Focus on the checks that are most relevant and important for your site’s current stage, whether that’s fixing technical debt or building topical authority.

But first, understand what SEO requires today.

What SEO Is All About Today?

SEO is all about the E-E-A-T. Why Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust are the only things that matter in modern search?

For years, SEO was often a game of volume, more keywords, more links, more content. That era is over. For a few years and now more than ever, Google’s ranking systems, powered by advanced machine learning, demand one thing above all: proven, verifiable quality. This quality is measured through the E-E-A-T framework.

The crucial evolution here is the addition of the first E: Experience. It’s no longer enough to be an “Expert” (a certified professional); you must demonstrate first-hand Experience with the topic.

ElementDefinitionWhy it Matters Now
Experience (E)Demonstrating first-hand knowledge of the topic.Proves you have used the product or lived the advice. Essential for reviews and “how-to” guides.
Expertise (E)Having high-level knowledge, qualifications, or skills.Signals you know the technical details and best practices (e.g., a certified mechanic writing about car repair).
Authoritativeness (A)Being widely recognised as the go-to source for the topic.Established through mentions, links, and citations from other reputable sources.
Trust (T)The security, accuracy, and overall safety of your website and content.Includes technical security (HTTPS), transparent contact info, and verifiable citations.

When you follow this SEO guide and checklist, you are optimising for keywords but majorly building a foundation that satisfies every aspect of E-E-A-T, making your site truly authoritative.

If you are still pondering what SEO is, then here are some SEO basics you need to know.

PHASE I – INITIAL SETUP & ESSENTIALS (Before You Begin)

This phase addresses the mandatory prerequisites and quick, high-impact fixes that must precede a full technical or content audit.

Quick Things to Consider (Instant Wins)

These actions are high-priority, high-impact tasks you can typically complete in under an hour. They instantly improve user experience, security, and link efficiency.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Check for HTTPSSecurity is non-negotiable (Trust – T). Google requires all sites to use HTTPS. If you’re still on HTTP, you lose credibility immediately.Check your URL (it should start with https://). If not, contact your host or use Cloudflare to install an SSL certificate.
Remove All Orphan PagesCrawl Efficiency. An orphan page has zero internal links pointing to it. Search engines can’t find these pages unless they are submitted via the sitemap, wasting crawl budget and ensuring they don’t pass or receive link juice.Use an SEO auditing tool (like Screaming Frog or Semrush) to crawl your site. Identify pages not linked from your main navigation or content body, and link them to the hierarchy or delete them if irrelevant.
Fix Broken Links (404s)Link Juice Preservation. Internal 404s (where a link on your site points to another non-existent page on your site) are a dead end for users and prevent the flow of internal link equity.Use GSC’s “Crawl Errors” report or an auditing tool to find these broken links. Fix them by updating the anchor text link to the correct URL or by implementing a 301 redirect.
Check Mobile-FriendlinessMobile-First Indexing. Google primarily uses the mobile version of your content for indexing and ranking. A poor mobile experience is a guaranteed rank killer.Run a single page through Google’s official Mobile-Friendly Test. Ensure text is readable without zooming, and tap targets are spaced correctly.

Tool Setups & Installation

Measurement is the only way to track progress. Before any optimisation begins, you need the right tools installed and talking to each other.

ToolActionWhy It’s Mandatory (The Diagnostic Phase)
Google Search Console (GSC)Set up property and verify site ownership (domain level preferred). This is your direct line to Google. GSC tells you how Google crawls, indexes, and ranks your site, providing critical error reports (404s, index issues, manual actions).
Google Analytics 4 (GA4)Install and verify the GA4 tag on every page of your site.GA4 tracks user behaviour after they click through (conversions, time on page, bounce rate). You need this to measure ROI and content quality.
SEO Plugin

 (Yoast/RankMath)

Mandatory installation and basic configuration (Sitemap generation, basic Title/Meta format). This streamlines your on-page optimisation, manages your XML sitemap, and handles technical elements like robots tags without coding.
Analytics IntegrationEnsure GSC is linked to GA4.Linking these two data sources allows you to see the actual search queries that drove traffic inside your Analytics reports, closing the diagnostic loop.

Bing Webmaster Tools – Don’t Ignore the Other 5%

While Google dominates, ignoring Bing means ignoring millions of desktop users (particularly in North America) and the unique, high-quality traffic they often provide. BWT is Microsoft’s free SEO console, offering features like a superior Keyword Research tool and IndexNow integration for near-instant content indexing.

The Setup – Two Simple Ways to Verify Your Site With Bing Webmaster Tools

BWT is free, and the setup is quick, especially if you already use Google Search Console (GSC).

Setup Method 1 – Instant GSC Import (Recommended)

  1. Navigate to Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Select “Import” under the option to transfer your sites from Google Search Console.
  3. Sign in with the Google account linked to your GSC profile.
  4. Grant Bing the necessary permissions.
  5. All your verified websites in GSC are automatically imported and verified in BWT.

Set up Method 2 – Manual Verification

If you don’t use GSC, follow the traditional method:

  1. Enter your website URL (https://www.yourdomain.com/) in the “Add your site manually” section.
  2. Choose your verification method:
    • HTML Meta Tag: Copy the provided <meta> tag and paste it into the <head> section of your website’s homepage. This is the most common method.
    • XML File: Download the BingSiteAuth.xml file and upload it to the root directory of your website server.
    • DNS Record: Add a CNAME record provided by BWT to your domain’s DNS configuration.
  3. After implementing the chosen method, return to BWT and click Verify.

Define Your Customer Avatar & Intent

You cannot write content that converts if you don’t know who you’re writing for and why they are searching. This step is about defining Intent before you even touch a keyword tool.

  • Define Your Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA). Who are they, what are their pain points, and what words do they use?
  • Determine the primary search intent for your high-level business goals (e.g., if you sell software, your primary goal might be Transactional; if you run a blog, it’s Informational).

Understanding intent ensures you match your content format (is it a blog post? a product page? a pricing table?) to what the user actually wants when they type a query.

Now that you have the initial setup, let’s move forward to our next phase.

PHASE II – TECHNICAL SEO AUDIT (The Foundation Checklist)

If Phase I was about ensuring you can track your site and apply quick fixes, Phase II is about ensuring the structural integrity of your website. Without a clean, fast, and organised foundation, Google’s bots will waste their crawl budget, and your content efforts will be wasted.

You can learn more about Technical SEO with this guide.

Crawlability & Indexability (Is Google Finding the Right Pages?)

Your site must be easily discoverable and understood by search engines. These checks ensure Google is accessing and prioritising the correct content.

Ensure search engines can discover, crawl, and index all important pages.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Audit robots.txt and check the Index Coverage Report in GSCCrawl Control. The robots.txt file tells search engines what not to crawl. Accidentally blocking critical resources (like CSS or JavaScript) or important content will break your site’s rendering and ranking. In GSC, check the Index > Pages report for errors like “Excluded by noindex tag” or “Blocked by robots.txt.” Use a simple file editor to review your robots.txt file manually.
Ensure the XML Sitemap is complete and submitted correctlyCrawl Guidance. The XML sitemap is a roadmap to all the pages you want Google to index. It ensures that deep pages that may not be easily found by internal links are still discovered.Verify your SEO plugin (Yoast/RankMath) generates a dynamic sitemap. Submit the sitemap URL directly in the Sitemaps section of GSC.

Robots.txt Optimisation

Best practices

  • Don’t block CSS or JavaScript
  • Don’t block important pages
  • Test with Google Search Console robots.txt tester
  • Keep it simple and clear

XML Sitemap

Generate comprehensive sitemaps, including:

  • Main sitemap index
  • Page sitemap
  • Post sitemap
  • Image sitemap
  • Video sitemap (if applicable)
  • News sitemap (for news sites)

Sitemap best practices:

  • Include last modified dates
  • Prioritise important pages
  • Don’t include redirected or noindexed pages
  • Keep individual sitemaps under 50MB or 50,000 URLs
  • Submit to Google Search Console
  • Reference in robots.txt
  • Update automatically when content changes

Canonical Tags

When to use canonicals:

  • Paginated content
  • Product pages with variations
  • Sort/filter parameters
  • Print versions of pages
  • Similar content across multiple URLs
  • Syndicated content

Self-referencing canonicals – Every page should have a canonical tag pointing to itself or its preferred version.

Meta Robots Tags

Pages to noindex

  • Admin pages
  • Thank you pages
  • Cart and checkout pages
  • Search result pages
  • Duplicate content
  • Thin or low-value pages
  • Tag/category pages (if they don’t add value)

Site Speed & Core Web Vitals (The User Focus)

Google confirms that Core Web Vitals (CWV) are a direct ranking factor because they measure real-world user experience (UX). You must prioritise these speed metrics.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Run PageSpeed Insights and prioritise fixes for LCP and INPUser Experience & Ranking. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures how quickly the largest visual element loads. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) measures the time from user interaction (like a click) to the visual response. These are critical for avoiding slow-loading penalties.Run the PageSpeed Insights tool. Prioritise the recommendations for improving your server response time and reducing render-blocking resources (JavaScript/CSS).
Optimise image file sizes and implement lazy loadingBandwidth & Load Time. Large, unoptimized images are the number one cause of poor LCP scores.Compress images using tools (e.g., TinyPNG) before uploading. Implement lazy loading so images outside the user’s current viewport are only loaded when scrolled into view.

Site Architecture & URL Structure

A clean, logical site hierarchy helps Google understand the relationship between your content and efficiently distributes link equity (PageRank) across the site.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Audit the site structure using the 3-Click RuleLink Equity Flow. The 3-Click Rule suggests that every important page should be accessible to a user (and Googlebot) in three clicks or fewer from the homepage. This ensures link juice is passed deep into your site.Review your navigation and internal links. For pages deeper than 3 clicks, add internal links from higher-level, more authoritative pages.
Standardise URL formatConsistency & Clarity. URLs should be short, descriptive, and easy to read. Inconsistent URL formats (e.g., using _ vs. -, or mixed case) can confuse crawlers and dilute link equity.Ensure all URLs are lowercase, use hyphens (-) as word separators, and contain only essential keywords.

Handling Duplication and Redundancy

Wasting Google’s crawl resources on thin or duplicate content is a massive efficiency drain and prevents your valuable pages from ranking higher.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Implement canonical tags on identical or near-identical contentDuplicate Content Prevention. Canonical tags (<link rel=”canonical” href=”…”>) tell Google which version of a page is the “master” source. This is essential for e-commerce sites (filters/sorts) or pages accessible via multiple URLs.Install the canonical tag on the duplicate page, pointing it back to the URL you want indexed. This preserves all link equity for the master URL.
Review and clean up thin content or “Zombie Pages”Crawl Budget & Authority. Thin content (pages with minimal, low-value text) and low-performing Zombie Pages (pages getting <10 clicks/year) drain crawl budget and dilute your overall site quality score.Audit: Identify pages with low traffic/impressions (GSC) and high bounce rate (GA4). Action: Either 1) Consolidate (merge into a high-value page and 301 redirect), 2) Improve (add 10x content), or 3) Delete (with a proper 410 Gone status code).

PHASE III – KEYWORD & INTENT STRATEGY (The Opportunity Checklist)

Having a sound technical foundation is necessary, but this phase is where you identify the market opportunity. Keywords today are merely the entry point; the actual success comes from understanding the user’s intent and building deep, interconnected content ecosystems (Topic Clusters).

AI-Powered Keyword Research

Keyword research in recent years has shifted because of AI’s incorporation in digital marketing. Today, it is about finding the highest volume terms. It means discovering keyword clusters that align with user journeys and capture semantic relationships.

Beyond Traditional Keywords – Topic Clusters

Google’s AI understands topics, not just keywords. Your strategy should reflect this.

Topic Cluster Framework

  1. Pillar Content – Comprehensive guide covering a broad topic (like this guide)
  2. Cluster Content – Specific subtopics linking back to the pillar
  3. Supporting Content – Related topics that strengthen topical authority

Example – If your pillar is “Digital Marketing Strategy,” clusters might include “Content Marketing,” “SEO,” “PPC,” etc. Each cluster has its own ecosystem of supporting content.

Modern Keyword Research Tools

For AI-Enhanced Discovery

  • Semrush Keyword Magic Tool – 25+ billion keyword database with intent classification
  • Ahrefs Keywords Explorer – Parent topic identification and traffic potential
  • Also Asked – Visual maps of “People Also Ask” questions
  • AnswerThePublic – Question-based keyword discovery
  • ChatGPT/Claude – Semantic keyword expansion and intent analysis

For Competitive Intelligence

  • Semrush Gap Analysis – Find keywords that competitors rank for that you don’t
  • Ahrefs Content Gap – Identify content opportunities between you and competitors
  • SpyFu – Historical ranking data and competitor keyword strategies

The Keyword Research Process For Beginners

Phase 1 – Seed Keyword Generation

Start with 5-10 broad topics relevant to your business. Use AI tools to expand:

Prompt for ChatGPT/Claude – “Generate 50 keyword variations related to [your topic], including informational, commercial, and transactional intent keywords. Focus on latest trends and emerging search behaviours.”

Phase 2 – Opportunity Scoring

For each keyword, calculate an opportunity score:

Opportunity Score = (Search Volume × CPC × Personal Relevance) / (Keyword Difficulty × Current Competition)

Prioritise keywords with scores above your median.

Phase 3 – SERP Reality Check

For top opportunities, manually review SERPs. Ask:

  • Can I create content that’s genuinely better than what’s ranking?
  • Do I have the authority/expertise to compete here?
  • Is the search intent aligned with my business goals?
  • Are there SERP features I can target (featured snippets, PAA, etc.)?

Phase 4 – Cluster Organisation

Group keywords into clusters with:

  • Primary keyword – Main target term
  • Secondary keywords – 3-5 related terms to include
  • LSI keywords – Semantically related terms
  • Question keywords – What, how, why variations

Finding Low-Competition Opportunities – The 3 Key Techniques

TechniqueGoal & BenefitKey Tools & ResourcesOpportunity Type
Question Keyword MiningFinds long-tail keywords often missed by standard tools. Goldmine for securing Featured Snippets and SGE (Search Generative Experience) positions.AlsoAsked.com (for question trees), QuestionDB (for community questions), Reddit, Quora, LinkedIn (for real user queries).Informational, High Intent
Programmatic SEOIdentifies patterns to scale content creation rapidly and efficiently. Targets low-volume, high-specificity searches.Spreadsheet/Database tools (for structured data deployment).Comparison, Local, Niche
Emerging Trend CapitalisationCaptures first-mover advantage on new or rising topics before competition catches up.Google Trends, Exploding Topics, TrendHunter (for consumer and industry foresight).Seasonal, New Category, Timely

Programmatic SEO Opportunity Types

PatternExample QueryContent Type
[Topic] + [Location]“digital marketing agency Chicago”Directory/Service Pages
[Product] + vs + [Competitor]“Chart.js vs Plotly.js”Comparison Pages/Reviews
[Topic] + [Industry]“social media marketing for dentists”Niche-Specific Guides

Voice Search & Conversational Keywords

With AI assistants and smart speakers, optimise for natural language:

  • Focus on long-tail, conversational phrases
  • Include question-based keywords
  • Target “near me” and local modifiers
  • Create content that answers specific questions concisely

Example transformation:

  • Traditional – “best CRM software”
  • Conversational – “What is the best CRM software for small businesses in 2025?”

Keyword Research Targeting Evergreen Topics

The goal of evergreen content is to capture traffic that remains relevant year after year.

This means moving away from time-sensitive trends and focusing on core, long-term problems your audience faces.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Focus on topics that solve perennial customer problemsSustainable Traffic. Content built around enduring problems (e.g., “How to save for retirement”) generates consistent traffic, unlike content tied to a single date or event (e.g., “This year’s budget”).Use Google Trends to check the historical search volume for a topic. If the graph is flat and consistent, it’s evergreen. If it spikes and drops, it’s seasonal/trendy.
Map keywords to customer funnel stages (Awareness, Consideration, Decision)Business Alignment. Keywords must match the user’s journey. Awareness (Informational) content generates traffic; Decision (Transactional) content generates revenue.Awareness: “What is SEO?” Consideration: “SEO software comparison.” Decision: “Potens Digital pricing.” Ensure you have content for all three stages to guide users through the funnel.

Mastering Search Intent (The SERP Analysis)

Google’s primary job is to deliver the single best result that matches the user’s intent. Your job is to analyse the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) to understand what Google believes the intent is.

Here is your quick guide for search intent mapping:

Understanding Modern Search Intent

Before touching keywords or creating content, you must learn search intent in an AI-driven SERP era. Google’s algorithms now understand context, nuance, and user expectations with unprecedented accuracy.

The Four Pillars of Search Intent

Informational Intent – Users seeking knowledge, answers, or understanding. These queries dominate voice search and SGE results.

Navigational Intent – Users looking for specific websites, brands, or pages. Brand authority matters more than ever here. Since we used this SEO guide on North Padel Club, it is ranking with the navigational intent for the search query “where is the best padel club in Canada.”

Commercial Investigation – Users researching before purchasing. This is where detailed comparisons, reviews, and thought leadership content win.

Transactional Intent – Users ready to take action, buy, subscribe, download. Conversion optimisation meets SEO here.

How to Analyse Search Intent

Intent mapping is the bridge between raw keyword data and high-performing content. It’s a systematic process to decode what a user wants and deliver it perfectly, every single time.

The 6-Step Mapping Process

Follow this structured workflow to turn any target keyword into a comprehensive content plan. This is the core of the intent mapping exercise.

SERP Feature Analysis

Don’t just look at ranking pages, analyse what Google displays:

  • Featured snippets indicate users want quick, authoritative answers
  • People Also Ask boxes reveal related questions users have
  • Video carousels suggest users prefer visual explanations
  • Local packs show geographic relevance matters
  • SGE panels indicate AI-generated overviews are serving this query

Content Format Patterns

Search your target keyword and identify dominant content types in the top 10 results:

  • Are they listicles? (e.g., “10 Best…”)
  • Long-form guides? (e.g., “Complete Guide to…”)
  • Tools or calculators?
  • Product pages?
  • News articles?

Match your format to what’s ranking. Google’s showing you exactly what users want.

SERP Intent Signals

Use tools like Semrush’s Keyword Overview or Ahrefs’ SERP analysis to identify:

  • Intent distribution – What percentage is informational vs. commercial?
  • Content depth – Are the top results 500 words or 5,000 words?
  • Freshness signals – Are the results from the last week or last year?

We have already told you about search intent mapping, so here is a quick reference to it.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Manually analyse the SERP: Are the top results guides, lists, or product pages?Format Match. If the top 10 results for your target keyword are all “Listicles” (e.g., “15 Best SEO Tools”), publishing a long-form “How-To Guide” will likely fail, regardless of quality, because the format doesn’t match the user’s expectation.Type your keyword into Google. Note the dominant format (List, Guide, Tool, Product Page). Use this data to dictate your content structure. Do what the top rankers are doing, but better.

The Content Cluster Model

Topical Authority is the new domain authority. Google wants to rank sites and even cite in Generative AI overviews that demonstrate comprehensive mastery over an entire subject, not just one high-ranking page. The Content Cluster Model achieves this by interlinking related articles.

Step 1

Identify your main Pillar Page and map out a minimum of 5-7 closely related Cluster Pages.

Step 2

Topical Depth. The Pillar Page (like this SEO guide) covers a broad topic. Cluster Pages (e.g., “Advanced Internal Linking Tactics”) cover a sub-topic in depth. Linking them together shows Google you have comprehensive mastery.

Step 3

Create a spreadsheet: Map 5-7 distinct subtopics that must link back to your Pillar Page. Ensure each cluster page targets a unique, long-tail keyword that supports the main Pillar keyword.

We have been using this Content Cluster Model to rank for search queries like “complete guide for padel in Canada” for the North Padel Club.

Here, our main pillar page, “The Ultimate Guide to Rules, Courts, and Where to Play”, has secured the first position on SERP.

While our cluster page “Padel Court Dimensions” has been successfully cited in Google AI overviews.

Optimising for Generative Search (SGE/AI)

With the rise of Search Generative Experience (SGE) and AI Overviews, content is increasingly summarised by Large Language Models (LLMs) and presented above the traditional results. Your goal is to be the source that AI cites.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Identify and write clear, concise “Punt Answers” for AI OverviewsAI Visibility. AI Overviews prioritise content that provides the most direct, trustworthy, and easily extractable answer to a question. The AI “punts” the question back to the user with a quick answer and a citation.Go through your content and ensure every H2/H3 question is immediately followed by a single paragraph or bulleted list that is 40-60 words long. This format is perfect for snippet and SGE extraction.

Creating SGE-Optimised Content

Google’s Search Generative Experience fundamentally changes how content appears in search results. Your content must work both for traditional rankings AND AI-generated overviews.

The SGE Reality

When SGE is active, AI-generated answers appear above traditional results. Your goal isn’t just to rank, it’s to be cited in the AI overview.

What Gets Featured in SGE:

  • Clear, authoritative answers to specific questions
  • Well-structured content with distinct sections
  • Content that demonstrates E-E-A-T
  • Sources with strong domain authority
  • Recent, updated information

For one of our clients, The Spice Trader, we often target question-based search queries to get featured in SGE. So, here is one great example of rendering authoritative answers to specific questions:

We targeted “What Spices Are Commonly Used in Chicken Noodle Soup?” covering the topic with proper E-E-A-T principles.

Another example from our project, The Spice Trader, is of the search query “What are the Best Ways To Store And Use Spices in Winters?” where we successfully managed to get featured in SGE.

Content Structure for SGE Visibility

The Inverted Pyramid Model:

Start with the most important information first:

  1. Direct Answer (first 50-100 words) – Answer the primary query immediately
  2. Supporting Context (next 200-300 words) – Explain why and provide necessary background
  3. Detailed Explanation (remaining content) – Deep dive into nuances, examples, case studies
  4. Actionable Takeaways – Clear next steps or implementation guidance

Writing for Humans AND AI

Google’s June 2025 Core Update was released on June 30, 2025, and completed its rollout by July 17, 2025. This update clearly focuses on rewarding high-quality, people-first content. So, no matter what, if your content is written for human helpfulness, it will rank.

Clarity First:

  • Use simple, direct language
  • Define technical terms
  • Break complex concepts into digestible chunks
  • Include examples and analogies

Semantic Richness:

Include related terms naturally:

  • Synonyms of your main keyword. For example, we optimised our content for North Padel Club with keyword variations for semantic richness.

Whether you search for “Padel Tennis in Toronto”

Or if you search for “Padel Sport in Toronto”, you will find North Padel Club on top.

  • Related concepts and entities
  • Industry terminology
  • Contextual phrases

Data-Driven Authority:

  • Cite credible sources (link to authoritative sites)
  • Include original research or data when possible
  • Use specific numbers and statistics
  • Reference recent studies (prefer the last 12 months)

Semantic Keyword Integration

Semantic keywords are not just synonyms; they are concepts and related terms that belong to the same topic. Google doesn’t rank pages; it ranks solutions to topics. Don’t obsess over exact-match keywords; focus on covering the topic comprehensively.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Integrate Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) terms naturally.Topical Depth & E-E-A-T. Including related concepts proves to Google that your content is a comprehensive, definitive resource that fully covers the topic.Find Them: Use Google’s “People Also Ask” and “Related Searches” sections for instant ideas. Tools like LSI Graph, Clearscope, or Surfer SEO also help map topical gaps.
Avoid “Exact Match” obsession; focus on topical coverage.Context is King. Google is smart enough to understand the relationship between “Padel Court Reservations” and “book a Padel club.” Forcing exact-match keywords looks spammy and hinders readability.Strategy: Sprinkle variations naturally throughout the content. Use the variations in subheadings (H2, H3) to signal topical breadth to both users and crawlers.
Use variations and related entities in subheadings.Signalling Topical Breadth. Subheadings are the primary signals of content organisation. Using a mix of primary and semantic variations helps satisfy multiple, slightly different user intents. If your primary keyword is “best SEO tools,” use an H2 like “Free SEO Audit Tools” or “Affordable Keyword Research Tools” to cover related semantic areas.

The 10x Content Framework

Creating content that ranks requires differentiation. Here’s how to create genuinely superior content:

1. Unique Research or Data

  • Conduct original surveys or studies
  • Analyse publicly available data in new ways
  • Share proprietary insights from your experience
  • Include case studies with real results

2. Visual Excellence

  • Custom graphics that explain complex concepts
  • Screenshots with annotations
  • Infographics that summarise key points
  • Video content for demonstration
  • Interactive elements (calculators, assessments, tools)

3. Expert Perspectives

  • Interview industry experts
  • Include quotes from practitioners
  • Share first-hand experience
  • Provide nuanced takes that surface-level content misses

4. Comprehensive Coverage

Don’t just skim the surface. Cover:

  • What it is (definition)
  • Why it matters (importance)
  • How it works (mechanism)
  • When to use it (application)
  • Common mistakes (pitfalls)
  • Advanced strategies (next-level tactics)
  • Future trends (what’s coming)

5. Practical Implementation

  • Step-by-step processes
  • Templates or frameworks that readers can use
  • Checklists for implementation
  • Tools and resources needed
  • Expected timeframes and results

Content Length & Depth

The Rule – Match or exceed top-ranking content depth, but never add fluff.

  • Short-form (500-1,000 words) – Quick answers, definitions, simple how-tos
  • Medium-form (1,500-2,500 words) – Specific topics requiring moderate detail
  • Long-form (3,000-5,000 words) – Comprehensive guides, pillar content
  • Ultimate guides (5,000+ words) – Exhaustive resources covering entire topics

Use tools like Clearscope, Surfer SEO, or MarketMuse to analyse top-ranking content and ensure you’re covering all relevant subtopics.

Content Freshness Strategy

  • Evergreen Content – Update every 6-12 months with:
    • Current statistics and data
    • New examples and case studies
    • Emerging trends and developments
    • Revised best practices
  • Trending Content – Update weekly or monthly during the trend lifecycle
  • News/Timely Content – Real-time updates as situations develop. Add “Last updated – [date]” at the top of articles. Google rewards freshness.

PHASE IV – ON-PAGE CONTENT EXECUTION (The Quality & E-E-A-T Checklist)

On-Page SEO is about information gain and usability. Every element, from your title to your links, must signal to Google that your page provides the absolute best user experience and the most authoritative answer to the search query.

Title Tag and Meta Description Optimisation

These are your primary marketing assets in the SERP. They dictate whether a user clicks your link or your competitor’s.

Write 100% unique Title Tags (max 60 chars) and prioritise high Click-Through Rate (CTR).

The First Impression! The Title Tag is the single most important on-page ranking factor, but its primary job is boosting CTR. A compelling, benefit-driven title will earn more clicks, which Google interprets as a quality signal.

Keep titles under 60 characters to prevent truncation. Include your primary keyword, but place it naturally. Use power words like “Definitive,” “Actionable,” “Statement”, or numbers (e.g., “15 Best…”).

Here, we used the element of surprise (Statement) while also using our main keywords.

If we had written “how padel is a community game” straight away, would that make our content worthy enough of clicks?

Content Depth and Information Gain

Content must demonstrate clear Experience and Expertise; it must tell the reader something they can’t easily find elsewhere.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Ensure your content is 10x better than the competitionE-E-A-T and Information Gain. Google rewards content that adds new value to the web. Simply regurgitating the top 5 results is not enough. This is how you signal expertise.Include: Original interviews, proprietary data (like your North Padel Club case study), custom graphics, unique frameworks (like the 4-Stage Potens Digital Philosophy), or a detailed, non-obvious perspective.
Establish Author AuthorityTrust and Expertise. For YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics, Google needs to know who wrote the content and why they are qualified.Implement clear Author Bio Boxes on every article, linking to a detailed author page that lists credentials, work experience, and expertise (e.g., “Written by John Doe, 15 years in SaaS SEO”).

Since our Author Authority is established correctly, we are getting cited for the search query “how padel is a community game” on the basis of authorship here.

E-E-A-T Implementation Framework

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness aren’t optional in 2025; they’re fundamental ranking factors, especially for YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics.

  • HTTPS (SSL certificate)
  • Clear privacy policy

  • Cookie consent notice (GDPR compliance)
  • Contact page with multiple methods (phone, email, form)
  • Physical address (if applicable)
  • Professional email addresses (not Gmail/Yahoo)

  • Trust badges (security, industry certifications)
  • Regular blog updates (shows active maintenance)
  • No broken links or errors
  • Professional design and branding
  • Clear disclosure of affiliates/sponsorships

Content Structure for Scannability

A well-structured page is easy to read, improves accessibility, and is more likely to earn high-value Featured Snippets.

A great example of scannability is here…

Why do you think North Padel Club is featured in the AI Overview and SERP results for the query “Why Indoor Padel Facilities Matter in Canada”?

Well, the reason for this is that we have well-structured and scannable content for this by directly answering questions.

An excerpt from a blog post by North Padel Club

This structure makes North Padel Club a direct source to quote answers for the said search query.

Users skim, especially on mobile. Large walls of text cause immediate fatigue. Google loves clean, structured data for snippets.

  • Keep paragraphs to 2-4 sentences max.
  • Use bold text to highlight key takeaways.
  • Use numbered or bulleted lists for steps and items, as these are frequently pulled for Featured Snippets.

Content Formatting for Readability

Make your content scannable and easy to consume.

Content Formatting Checklist
  • Short paragraphs (2-4 sentences maximum)
  • Bullet points and numbered lists for scanability
  • Bold key phrases (but don’t overdo it)
  • Use white space generously
  • Include relevant images every 300-500 words
  • Break up text with subheadings
  • Highlight important takeaways in boxes or callouts
  • Use tables for comparison data
  • Include a table of contents for long content
Content Typography Checklist
  • Font size – 16-18px minimum for body text
  • Line height – 1.5-1.8 for comfortable reading
  • Line length – 50-75 characters per line optimal
  • High contrast between text and background
  • Readable font (avoid decorative fonts for body text)

Rich Snippets & Structured Data

Structured data helps search engines understand your content and can earn enhanced SERP features.

Key schema types for most sites

  • Article Schema
  • FAQ Schema
  • HowTo Schema
  • Breadcrumb Schema

Use Google’s Rich Results Test to validate your structured data.

Media Optimisation

Images and videos provide context and break up text, but they must be optimised for speed and accessibility.

Ensure all images have descriptive Alt Text and utilise captions. Why is it critical? Alt Text describes the image for visually impaired users and for search engines that cannot “see” the image. Captions improve user experience by explaining the media.

How to fix it? Alt text should be descriptive and contain relevant keywords where natural (e.g., “Potens Digital 4-stage SEO checklist diagram”). Captions help clarify complex charts or data.

Optimise embedded videos (YouTube/Vimeo) for speed. Why? Core Web Vitals. If you embed media, it must load asynchronously (after the primary content). Poorly embedded videos can crush your LCP score.

How to fix it? Use the specific embedding code provided by your CMS or plugin that is designed for lazy-loading videos.

Complete Image Optimisation

  1. File Format:
  • WebP – Best compression, wide browser support in 2025
  • AVIF – Even better compression for supporting browsers
  • PNG – When transparency is needed
  • JPG – Legacy format, still acceptable
  • SVG – For logos and icons
  1. File Size:
  • Compress all images (use TinyPNG, ImageOptim, or Squoosh)
  • Target under 100KB for most images
  • Serve responsive images with srcset
  • Use lazy loading for below-fold images
  1. Alt Text:
  • Describe the image clearly and concisely
  • Include the target keyword naturally when relevant
  • Don’t keyword stuff
  • Be helpful for visually impaired users

  1. Image Schema

URL Structure Optimisation

Clean, descriptive URLs help both users and search engines.

URL Best Practices

  • Keep short (under 100 characters ideal)
  • Include the target keyword
  • Use hyphens (not underscores) to separate words
  • Use lowercase
  • Avoid parameters when possible
  • Remove stop words (the, and, or, but)
  • Be descriptive of content

Examples

  • Bad – yoursite.com/p=123&cat=blog&id=seo
    Good – yoursite.com/seo-guide-2025
  • Bad – yoursite.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-understanding-everything-about-seo
    Good – yoursite.com/complete-seo-guide

Internal Linking Strategy

Internal links are the veins of your site, distributing authority and helping users (and bots) discover content. This is the implementation of your Content Cluster plan.

Link the Pillar Page to all Cluster Pages, and the Cluster Pages back to the Pillar. Why? Topical Authority Flow. This cross-linking confirms to Google that you have a deep, interconnected expertise on the entire subject, strengthening the ranking potential of all related pages.

Strategic Internal Linking

  1. Pillar-Cluster Model
  • Link from pillar pages to all cluster content
  • Link from cluster content back to pillar
  • Cross-link related cluster content
  1. Contextual Relevance
  • Link when mentioning related topics
  • Use descriptive anchor text (not “click here”)
  • Link to high-priority pages more frequently
  1. Link Distribution
  • Important pages should have more internal links pointing to them
  • Aim for 3-5 internal links per 1,000 words
  • Balance between user value and SEO benefit
  1. Anchor Text Best Practices
  • Use varied, natural anchor text
  • Include target keywords but avoid over-optimisation
  • Make anchor text descriptive of the destination page
  • Occasionally, use branded anchors

Example

  • Bad – Learn more about SEO [here]
Good – Our comprehensive keyword research guide covers 15 techniques for finding high-value keywords.

Use varied, descriptive anchor text (the clickable text) that accurately reflects the target page’s content, rather than generic phrases like “click here.”

External Linking Strategy

Linking to authoritative sources builds trust and provides value to readers.

When to link externally:

  • Citing statistics or research
  • Referencing tools or resources
  • Supporting claims with evidence
  • Providing additional reading
  • Mentioning competitors or alternatives (demonstrates objectivity)

Best practices:

  • Link to highly authoritative domains (.edu, .gov, major publications)
  • Ensure sources are current and relevant
  • Use “nofollow” for untrusted or paid links
  • Open external links in new tabs (optional, debated)
  • Regularly audit external links to fix broken ones

PHASE V – OFF-PAGE SEO & AUTHORITY BUILDING (The Trust Checklist)

Off-Page SEO is where you build external validation, the Authoritativeness (A) and Trustworthiness (T) of your E-E-A-T score. It’s all about earning high-quality, relevant “votes” from the rest of the web.

Backlink Quality Assessment

The most critical principle in off-page SEO is this: “Quality beats quantity every time.”

Toxic links will actively hurt your performance.

  1. Focus only on acquiring links from genuinely relevant, high-authority sites.

Link Equity & Relevance. A link from a major industry publication (high authority) that is topically related to your business is the most powerful ranking signal available. Irrelevant or low-quality links carry little weight.

Vet potential partners using SEO tools (Domain Rating/Authority metrics). Ask: “Does this site solve a problem for my customer, or is it just spam?”

  1. Conduct a link detox and disavow toxic or spammy links.

Protecting Trust. Backlinks from link farms, foreign directories, or obviously spammy sites can lead to manual or algorithmic penalties. Removing this baggage is essential.

Regularly audit your backlink profile in Google Search Console or a third-party tool. If links are clearly manipulative, use the Google Disavow Tool to instruct Google to proactively ignore them.

Scalable Link Earning Strategies

True authority comes from earning links, not buying or trading them. These strategies focus on proving the value of your content to link editors.

For example, one of our SEO Executives contributed a unique answer to the article: “4 Ways to Optimize Content for Featured Snippets and Answer Boxes.” This answer was selected, resulting in a DoFollow backlink from CMO Times (Domain Rating: 35), citing Potens Digital as the expert source.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Resource Page Outreach: Find and pitch your guide to pages listing “Best resources on X.”High-Intent Link Target. Resource pages exist explicitly to link out to great content. If your guide is 10x better than what’s currently listed, this is a strong opportunity.Search Google using targeted operators like [your topic] “best resources” inurl: links and email the site owner with a personalised, non-spammy pitch highlighting why your resource is a better fit.
Unlinked Mentions: Turn every mention of your brand/key employees on other sites into an active backlink.Low-Hanging Fruit. If a high-authority site has already referenced your brand, they trust you enough to mention you. A simple request to convert the text mention into a hyperlink is often successful.Use Google Alerts or advanced monitoring tools to track your brand name, product names, and key employee names. Draft a brief, polite email to the site editor.

Building Brand Authority (Non-Link)

Authority isn’t just about hyperlinks. Google uses other verifiable signals to build trust in your brand’s expertise and reputation.

ActionWhy It’s CriticalHow to Check/Fix
Publish information about the author(s) (Author Box) on your site to signal expertise.Direct E-E-A-T Signal. For YMYL topics, Google must confirm the real-world credentials of the content creator. Transparency builds trust.Create dedicated, highly detailed author pages that list verifiable experience, certifications, or professional history, and link the author box on the content page to this authority page.
Ensure consistent brand messaging and citations across the web (Local SEO focus).Business Trust & Verification. Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) information across high-authority directories (Google Business Profile, Yelp, etc.) is the foundation of local SEO and general brand trust.Manually check or use a tool to audit your citations. Every instance of your company’s name, address, and phone number must be spelt and formatted identically to avoid confusing search engines.

Understanding Link Value

Not all links are created equal. Google evaluates links based on multiple factors:

Link Quality Factors

  1. Domain Authority – Links from high-authority domains carry more weight
  2. Relevance – Links from topically related sites are more valuable
  3. Placement – Contextual links within content > footer links
  4. Anchor Text – Descriptive anchors provide context (but avoid over-optimisation)
  5. Link Freshness – New links signal ongoing relevance
  6. Traffic – Links from sites that send actual traffic are more valuable
  7. Naturalness – Diverse link profiles look more organic

Red flags Google watches for

  • Sudden link velocity spikes
  • Exact-match anchor text over-optimisation
  • Links from link farms or PBNs
  • Paid links without nofollow
  • Footer/sidebar links at scale
  • Irrelevant link sources
  • Reciprocal link schemes

White-Hat Link Building Strategies

These tactics build genuine, high-quality backlinks that improve rankings and drive traffic.

Strategy 1 – Digital PR & Linkable Assets

Create content that naturally attracts links from journalists and publishers.

Types of linkable assets:

Original Research & Data Studies

  • Industry surveys with unique insights
  • Proprietary data analysis
  • Trend reports and forecasts
  • Annual benchmark studies

Example – “State of SEO 2025 – Analysis of 10,000 Websites”

Interactive Tools & Calculators

  • ROI calculators
  • Assessment tools
  • Comparison tools
  • Generators (headline, business name, etc.)

Example – “SEO ROI Calculator – Project Your Traffic Growth”

Visual Assets:

  • Original infographics
  • Data visualizations
  • Charts and graphs
  • Templates and frameworks

Ultimate Guides:

  • Comprehensive resources on topics (like this guide)
  • Industry encyclopedias
  • “Everything you need to know” content

Outreach process:

  1. Create a genuinely valuable asset
  2. Identify target publications (use BuzzSumo, Muck Rack, Twitter lists)
  3. Find journalist contacts (Hunter.io, Voila Norbert)
  4. Craft personalised pitches
  1. Follow up once (after 3-4 days)
  2. Track placements and measure success

Strategy 2 – Broken Link Building 2.0

The classic technique, refined for 2025.

Process:

  1. Find target sites with resource pages in your niche
  2. Scan for broken links using:
    • Check My Links (Chrome extension)
    • Ahrefs’ Broken Link Checker
    • Screaming Frog (crawl specific pages)
  3. Analyse broken link context – what was it linking to?
  4. Create or identify replacement content (your content that fits)
  5. Reach out with a value-first approach.

Success rate improvers:

  • Target pages with multiple broken links (fix several)
  • Ensure your content is genuinely better than what was there
  • Personalise each outreach
  • Offer to help fix other issues you notice
  • Don’t be pushy about your link

Strategy 3 – Guest Posting (Done Right)

Guest posting still works, but quality matters more than ever.

Finding opportunities

Search operators

  • “your keyword” + “write for us”
  • “your keyword” + “guest post guidelines”
  • “your keyword” + “become a contributor”
  • “your keyword” + intitle – “guest post”

Qualifying sites

  • Domain Authority 30+ (ideally 40+)
  • Active engagement (comments, social shares)
  • Editorial standards (well-written content)
  • Relevant to your niche
  • Actual organic traffic (check Ahrefs/Semrush)

Creating value

  • Pitch unique angles, not generic topics
  • Provide original insights and examples
  • Match the site’s style and quality
  • Include expert quotes or data
  • Make it their best-performing content

Guest posting mistakes to avoid

  • Targeting low-quality sites
  • Writing promotional content
  • Using overly optimised anchor text
  • Neglecting author bio optimisation
  • Publishing identical content across multiple sites
  • Ignoring engagement after publication

Strategy 4 – Resource Page Link Building

Get featured on curated lists of resources in your industry.

Finding resource pages

  • “your keyword” + “resources”
  • “your keyword” + “useful links”
  • “your keyword” + intitle:resources
  • “your keyword” + “helpful tools”
  • inurl:links + “your keyword”

Strategy 5 – Journalist Source Requests & Media Opportunities

Position yourself as an expert source for journalists and media outlets.

Active Platforms (Post-HARO Shutdown)

  • Featured (Featured.com) – Premium curated journalist requests, high-quality publications
  • Connectively (formerly HARO – Rebranded continuation of HARO service under Cision
  • SourceBottle – Free platform with daily journalist requests
  • Terkel – Community-driven expert roundup opportunities
  • Quoted – Professional journalist-source matching platform
  • JournoRequests – Twitter-based journalist requests (follow @JournoRequest)
  • #JournRequest – Twitter/X hashtag for real-time media requests
  • ProfNet – Premium service through PR Newswire (paid)
  • ResponseSource – UK-focused but accepts international experts

Note! HARO shut down in 2024 but was relaunched as Connectively by Cision. The process remains largely the same.

Expert Source Request Strategy

  1. Subscribe to relevant categories across multiple platforms
  2. Set up alerts to catch requests quickly
  3. Respond within 2 hours (journalists work on tight deadlines)
  4. Provide valuable, detailed answers:
    • Answer the exact question asked
    • Include specific examples and data points
    • Write professionally with zero typos
    • Include a brief bio and a professional headshot
    • Don’t be overly promotional (focus on expertise)
    • Cite sources when mentioning statistics
  5. Include all relevant credentials
  6. Follow up if featured (thank the journalist, share the article on social)
  7. Build relationships with journalists who use your quotes

Pro Tips for Success:

  • Be specific – Vague answers don’t get picked
  • Include data – Journalists love statistics and research
  • Tell stories – Real examples make content compelling
  • Be quotable – Write in sound-bite-friendly language
  • Diversify platforms – Don’t rely on just one service
  • Track results – Monitor which platforms yield the best results
  • Optimise your bio – Make credentials immediately clear

Success metrics – Response rates vary by platform and industry (typically 5-15% of responses get featured), but a single placement in a major publication can generate significant authority, traffic, and backlinks, making the effort worthwhile.

Alternative approach – Direct media outreach

If you’re not getting traction with request platforms, proactively pitch journalists:

  1. Identify journalists covering your industry (Twitter, Muck Rack)
  2. Follow their work and engage authentically
  3. Offer exclusive insights or data they can’t get elsewhere
  4. Build relationships before you need coverage
  5. Make yourself available as a go-to expert source

Conclusion

The Potens Digital Definitive SEO Guide is not a one-time fix; it is a living philosophy centred around E-E-A-T.

Modern SEO demands continuous attention to three core areas:

  1. Technical Excellence – Your site must be fast, mobile-friendly, and accessible for crawlers.
  2. Topical Authority – You must demonstrate comprehensive, trustworthy mastery over entire subjects (not just individual keywords) using the Content Cluster Model.
  3. Measurable Results – Every action must be tied back to performance, as demonstrated by our success with North Padel Club.

By moving sequentially through this 4-Stage, Priority-Driven Approach (Setup, Technical, Intent, Authority), you are moving away from quick, volatile tricks and building a sustainable digital asset that Google will reward with stable, high-value organic traffic.

The most crucial step is always the next one!

How We Used These Strategies to Achieve a Top 5 Local Ranking in 3 Months

At Potens Digital, we turn these complex frameworks into tangible growth. This case study demonstrates the power of implementing our 4-Stage, Priority-Driven Approach.

The Client & The Problem

North Padel Club needed immediate visibility in the fiercely competitive Toronto sports and recreation market. They were struggling to break into the top 10 for the primary, high-intent local query, “Padel Toronto,” hindering direct bookings and awareness. Organic visibility had plateaued.

The Strategy Applied

We initiated a full-spectrum audit focused on the core elements of the Potens Digital SEO guide and checklist, prioritising Local SEO and immediate content fixes:

  • Local Intent Focus (Phase III Priority) – We analysed the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) for “Padel Toronto” and optimised the target page to satisfy the dominant transactional intent (booking, location, pricing).
  • Technical/Local Priority (Phase V Integration) – We optimised site speed and ensured flawless, consistent local citations (NAP) to build immediate Trust and Authority signals, crucial for local ranking.
  • On-Page Execution (Phase IV) – We restructured the target page to immediately satisfy the transactional intent, ensuring the title and meta description were perfectly optimised to maximise Click-Through Rate (CTR).

The Result

Over a 3-month period, consistent application of the 4-Stage strategy yielded the following proprietary metrics for the target query “Padel Toronto“:

  • Target Query Position – Achieved an Average Position of 5.4, breaking into the highly visible Top 5.
  • Visibility & Traffic – This ranking generated 3.77K Impressions and 316 highly qualified Clicks to the booking page.
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR) – The optimised title and description (Phase IV) achieved an outstanding 8.4% CTR for a competitive non-branded query, demonstrating exceptional message matching.

Our strategies are built on verifiable experience, not abstract theory. Now, let’s begin the actionable SEO checklist.
